Part2
The prince is an interesting character. He is naïve yet at some point he is wise. While his naivety could kill him (getting trick by the snake) his words of wisdom (philosophy) could leave an adult person stunned. He sees things that other people usually don’t; as evident to the drawing of the author that he can decipher (boa constrictor). He seems to be a curious fellow; he is not shy to ask. He seems to be diligent to keep his planet clean by cutting any baobabs that grows on his land. He loves his rose very much. He would take great care of it.
He led a long sheltered life as a result of being alone in his planet (he is not from Earth. Therefore, he is an Alien) Thus there are many things he doesn’t know about. Love was one of them; he has a fall out with his rose after she lied to him. She never appreciates him. He is quite forgiving since he forgave rose. And so he went on an adventure due to curiosity. He is willing to take advices. Brave in a sense that he don’t mind to travel alone. In his adventure he learns a lot of things. Like the reason why his rose was much more unique than the other rose; an encounter from a fox. It is stated he misses the rose dearly and wants to come back. Due to his “young” mental state, he seems a little bratty at times demanding for answers and drawings from the author. He seems to hate the adult thinking of value, like the author. Like any everybody else, he has doubts (about his rose specifically) (as evident to the fox chapter).That’s what made him human. He could just a spirit in nature. Generally, that what people will think….and they will just stop there.
I speculate that he is the personification of the author’s childhood; the creative part of his mind. The journey that was done by the Prince might be the author’s journey through life but in the eyes of his “child in him”. It is stated that the author was dehydrated and was lost in a Sahara desert (the story was inspired by his survival in the Sahara). It is therefore possible that the Prince was just a mirage vision of his past, telling him to maybe take on his arts. When he finally found water the prince presumably dies (bitten by a snake) and disappears. Which means; the author hydrated and therefore cured from the delusion of mirage. The rose could be a personification of his wife or past lover. Since, the rose plays hard to get- a tactic commonly used for courting. The meaning of the departure of the prince could be that if you play hard to get for too long you lover could leave you. There are 2 observation of relationship in this;
1) don’t take your lover for granted.
2) Lingering feelings of your lover could distract your journey.
1) don’t take your lover for granted.
2) Lingering feelings of your lover could distract your journey.
In my opinion, the story (the ending especially) could be perceived in 4 different interpretations;
1) 1) Loss of his childhood because he has “Matured” and can’t go back. Thus he mourns for the prince. It is speculated that the prince is a part of the author. We should enjoy our childhood.
2) 2) It’s just a reminder/vision that the author should not take his creative mind for granted.
3) 3) How losing a friend could be tragic. Imaginary or not.
4) 4) The prince is just a spirit that reminds him about his creative mind who maybe sees the world in the right way.” One sees clearly only with the heart. What is essential is invisible to the eye.”
