Taming the Tamed

Taming the Tamed
Character analysis of Fox by Antoine Saint de Exupery

Friendship can only be attained by investing love in others.
In the stories of Little Prince, there was an encounter with a fox in a certain planet. The Fox is a supporting character in the story and only serves as a foil, but its personality and its importance in the story remains important as it plays a big role in The Little Prince’s Departure while shaping the Little Prince’s personality too.
The Fox appeared out of nowhere upon its encounter with The Little Prince. The Fox later answers Little Prince’s mourning of the ordinariness of his rose, after the latter stumbled upon a rose garden. As they begin to develop friendship, the Fox imparts the Prince with the knowledge and understanding about why the Rose is so important to him, therefore serving its role as foil character, exploring more into The Little Prince and a bit of The Rose personality.
However, the Fox itself is not a simple character. Its relationship with the Prince as both mentor and student happens because of its wisdom, knowledge and loyalty. The Fox, as we might see, is an interpretation of Friendship, despite the real animal fox being a stereotype of cunning and twisted wit. However, the twist of this fact means so much, speaking of trusting others despite however they may appear or look. The Fox’s unshaken loyalty upon its taming, the Little Prince’s departure, and even enriching the Little Prince’s with necessary understanding, the Fox is but a selfless and pure caring, the true meaning of friendship. Unlike what we may experience in life, whereas friendship involves in giving and gaining, “mutual relation”, or so they say.
Finally, like any other supporting characters and the main characters in the Little Prince’s story, the Fox explores in depth about us (the readers, mankind) and our way of living. Its personality is an example of true friendship that perhaps in our life, has become so insipid and even bitter, much feared. And as we now understand, perhaps it will come back to us with some other important question:
Can friendship become more than even loyalty, trust and care? Something like an intimate love for each other?

Bay Leaves with Chrysanthemum

Hands. Filthy hands: touching in the most peculiar places. Strange, foreign and painful.

Faceless strangers; He would introduce-no, more like force- me to. They would tear me apart, spit on me, hit and would do things to me. Au contraire to what is believed; the pleasure never came….just pain….and the emptiness of guilt that comes with it. After some time, my mind has turned so accustom to such vile act that it can block itself-refusing to record any of it to my memories.

Precious memories….I do not want to lose. Precious memories: of my pleasant past. Precious memories before I was forcefully pimp by my uncle. Precious memories: of my long gone parents-my refuge. Gone were the days where I could be a normal teenager. Gone were the days where I could sleep peacefully. Gone were my days of freedom. Gone was my home. Gone were my protectors….Gone.

I look at my reflection in the mirror. I saw a girl who lost everything. I saw a girl who is just a shriveled version of the past. I saw a girl who is a prisoner of a horrid fate. I saw-.. a disgusting version of myself. I let a sigh escape from my lips as I step into the shower.

I turn the shower full blast with hot water. I let the water drum on my body for a minute-to let my body adjust to the heat of the water- before I start scrubbing my skin aggressively-ignoring the painful sting of soap penetrating to my wound. I felt the need to cleanse myself-destroying any evidence sex. After all, I don’t need any more reminder of me being used.  After that, I lessen the intensity of the water. I drop my hips to the slippery floor tile. I let my tense body unwind with the help of the steady beat of the water to my body. It was only this time I can finally relax. Tears began to roll and mix itself with the torrent of water. It was only now, then, I let myself to cry.  Finally I can get it out…FINALY I can cry….Finally I can show my emotion….
It was my pride that kept me from crying-no matter how much abuse I get. No matter how many hits slap or punch, I will not cry. No matter how many verbal abuses hurl at me, no tear will drop. I will not give them the benefit of seeing me cry. I have to hold it in. Not a single tear. None. This is my only victory. It’s what’s left of my dignity. I don’t care if it’s childish but this is what kept me sane.

After I’ve finish crying, I stood up and turn the shower off. I dry myself with the towel. I got dressed.

BANG

The door crash opens with a loud “Bang”. My uncle looms dangerously at the entrance. His crooked smile turns sinister as I saw him holding a knife on his right hand. The pungent smell of cheap alcohol that came from his mouth invades the air.

‘SHIT, he is going to kill me’ my mind warns me. My expression quickly twisted from to horrify as I know what is to come. He staggers aggressively towards me. My scalp screams in pain as he pulls me –through my hair- to the bed. Any retaliation was greeted with a slap or a punch. He pinned my hands with his right hand as he unbuckle his pants with the other. All efforts for breaking free were futile. He tried to strip my clothing. I could feel my blood pumping into my head; desperately finding a solution to this ordeal.

“I DON’T WANT TO DO THIS ANYMORE!” fear fueled my courage to scream those words out. All of a sudden, adrenaline course through my legs. I concentrate all my energy to my legs and use all of them in full to land a hit on his abdomen. He hurls himself out of the bed in pain. I seized this chance to make an escape.

With haste I ran out of the house- no caring about what state my clothing is, not caring about shoes….not caring about anything but my freedom. Fear is what stopping me from taking a glance back to the house. My mind was so focused on running that directions of where I am going were the last thing on my mind. My legs muscles sing to me in a high pitched pain but I kept running-slowing down was not an option. I just kept going until my legs finally gave out. I feel to my knees, panting heavily from the lack of air to my lungs. It is only now then I let my head turn to check if I was being chased.

To my relieved, there was no one. I drew in a sigh (or a pant) of relive. Slowly my body cools down. My mind grew a little calmer. I started to survey my surrounding.

Good ending
The night sky seems to light the road with its stars- like a chandelier in a grand romantic ballroom. The air seems cool because of the lack of sunlight. The exquisite smell of freedom began to dawn on me. Hot tears roll out of my orbs. Hot happy tears. Happiness overcame my heart.

At last I’m free.

Bad ending

Suddenly a hand violently reaches out to my mouth. Muffling any words coming out of my house.
“Cheeky aren’t you eh?” the familiar cruel voice of my uncle, whispering to my ears. His voiced filled with anger and dark cruel joy. “It’s fine; you’ll be nothing but a caged bird”

Everything my world turns dark in crimson then black…Black as a pitch.

Normal ending

It was my home. My old real home. My refuge.  It seem my legs has led me to where I originally belong. I look at the house in pure nostalgia. Everything looks the same except there a family living in it. A happy family. A real happy family.

“I was like that…I used to be like that…I used to have a real family i-“ A few emotion -jealousy, anger, sadness and finally despair- cloud my mind. Chaos was happening inside my head. My tears kept flowing in despair.

Hearing a car engine coming fast going this way, my body automatically timed itself to jump at the road. At a precised moment I jump and the car crash into me. From that moment, time seemed to slow down. I could see the shocked expression of the driver as his car had an impact on my body. My body soars high off the ground. There was no pain, everything felt so serene as I fly up. I took my last glance to see the beautiful nightly stars. As I close my eyes, my body withdrew itself on a cold asphalt ground. My mind slowly succumbs to the darkness. ‘Ah~ sweet freedom’ my mind comments before my conscious is completely obliterated by the darkness.

Christmas Rose

Christmas Rose-Relieve my Anxiety

Adrian was rampaging around the house. He was on a important quest to find a lost item. The item seemed to have a great value to his life. Without it; his life would be very much in danger. After over turning the sofa for the 10th time, he concluded that the item that he seeks was obviously not in his living room. So he begins to turn his attention to his room.

"Where the hell is it?" Adrian grunted as he lifts up his bed to check for the missing item. After spending 3 disappointing hours in his room, he dejectedly tries his luck in the kitchen. After all he did recall going in there and to grab some food.

‘Maybe I dropped it there’ he thought as he enters the kitchen.
He started with the cabinet and then the china cupboard. He went on great length to search for that item. From dismantling the sink to taking out the kitchenware- still no sign of that item. No gleam of light or clue comes into surface. His search has become more desperate by the minute. His frustration grew to a peak, he started to feel exhausted and his stubbornness to locate that item grew VERY thin. Thus, he begins to find a good excuse to save his own ass. After awhile wrecking his brain for a “foolproof” excuse, it quickly dawn on him that excuses won’t work on her.

As the time is ticks rather hurriedly, his mind went overdrive with paranoia. Now all he could think off; was that either he hang himself there or find somebody to blame for -which he know none of them work.’ SHE IS COMING! I CAN FEEL IT!!Realizing his mind turning mad, he tried to relax his mind by rubbing his temple slowly and take a deep breath.

As his mind drifted off to certain serenity, it was then; his wife just took that right moment to enter the house. His face immediately turned white, cold sweat starting to form. His eyes began to dilate in panic. Everything for him seems to happen in slow motion.

"Hone-Woow what the hell happened here?"Kate screeched as she saw the house's furniture upside down. She quickly rushed into the house to check on her prized china that was on the kitchen. Much to her relieve it was still there and seems nothing is broken.

Now she have to search for answers from her husband who she found him under the dinner table moan something about caring more about her china than him but she just shrug the comment off and press Adrian for answer.
"What happen here?" Kate Interrogated
"I was finding for something...."Adrian bit his lips bitterly as he answers.
Kate quickly knew something important was missing. After all Adrian was a simple man. If something is lost, he wouldn't even bother to find it -he will just buy a new one-unless it’s important.

"A-D-R-I-A-N"Kate voice rang slowly and deadly. Adrian’s life started to flash before his eyes. Hanging himself to death seems like a better option than to face his wife’s wrath. It is after all less of a heartbreak.
"What is lost?"Kate's voice was dangerously low

"Ermmm..." Adrian gulped. A sudden strike of wisdom waltz into his mind. He could lie that a robber robs his house and stole his wedding ring but that would lead a whole search party to find this imaginary robber. And a determine Kate is an angry Kate (not to mention stubborn). Honesty is the best policy so he quickly dismissed the idea  and confessed that he lost the ring. The WEDDING RING.

Kate's frown dissolves into smile. She started to search her hand bag and found it with ease. She shows it to him that his and her wedding band was with her all along. Adrian quickly breathe out a sigh of relieve.

“I did tell you 2 days ago that I was going to enlarge your ring since you’ve been complaining that it’s too small....but obviously you weren't listening….Men.”Kate rolled her eyes.”Now, come on lets clean this place up!”

Adrian’s lips etched out a small grin as he stood up. He place securely his ring back to his fore finger and began to carry the sofa back to its original place.

Kate nonchalantly said “Honey, I’m pregnant”
Distracted, Adrian drop the sofa on his feet.
One Sentence: Adrian thought he lost his wedding ring when it turns out his pregnant wife had it all along.

Part2
He does not have common sense. He is dirty. He is smelly. He is delusional, thinking he looks great with those beard. He hates children. He doesn’t mind eating children.  He tortures monkeys. He traps and eats birds. He hates his wife. He loves tricking his wife. He is a retired monkey trainer. He is Mr Twit.

There signs of him being a cannibal as he doesn’t mind eating boys that he accidentally trap. Clearly, he doesn’t have a conscious anymore to tell him what is right.

He is a little paranoid as his house doesn’t have windows; fearing people might come looking inside his house, to steal or stalk.

His wife, who is no better than him, gets to be trick by him. The wife, of course, retaliates with another prank. It’s a never ending cycle. Sadly, they do not seem to understand how marriage works. Marriage is about compromisation and to accept their short-comings to work together. It’s not a contract; it’s an ongoing negotiation. It’s helping each other for the better and hurting each other. Although, at times they do help each other; it’s not for the best, it’s for the worse. As evident of them buying huge guns with 50 bullets- just to eat a bird pie. If things don’t go their way, they will blame each other. It’s really makes me wonder how did they fell in love and get married. Only by superficial look? It was stated that Mrs Twit was beautiful when she was young.

Mr Twit might sound like a stereotype villain who is not 3 dimensions but of all his flaws, but at least he still has a dream or goal (to have 1st upside down monkey circus). Which in a sense humanize him to a certain small degree. His plus point though, was outshined by his bad points (unsurprising). Although, I would like to know how or why he became like that. I mean no one could be born mean spirited. Surely maybe, there was a wrongful guidance or traumatic past or event that made him….a twit? The author should have explore more on their past. It will make them more human.

I know I might sound hard to please but still, even if the book’s aim is for children (in a comedic genre) there is room for improvement in this story. It’s a predictable story with little plot. A typical villains-die-in-the-end story. Carefully crafted English wasted on such mediocre plot. It’s a bit of a waste, I feel. The story could have been much better if the author took time in developing the background story of the characters.
Well, at least there are morals in this story. Such as;

1)Marriage is not as simple as it looks (both meanings of looks).
2)Do not be cruel to animals.
3)Do not have long beards-if you do wash them regularly.
4)Do not be cruel or mean spirited.
5) And lastly, don’t be a twit.
